Happy Birthday Mom and Amanda!

On Saturday I went to the movies with the aussie bunch :) Amanda met Deb from Canberra at the UP hotel and brought her along, she’s a marine biologist and here for a conference. Deb’s the first person I met here who could laugh about my T-Shirt from Sevilla (with the no aprobaré, aprobare... daisy count on it), as she went to study in latin america and has a nicaraguan husband. So we went for an italian dinner first with olive oil, bread and pizza :) As Deb went here four times already we had a lively chat about the culture ^^ With some future plans of the streetworkers to improve the situation and some motherly hints for Reece :)
Originally Reece wanted to watch the time traveller’s wife, but it wasn’t out yet, so he was in the wrong mood for The Hangover, but we others found it hilarious. Normally you can find the good scenes of comedy in the trailer already, but this time you could laugh the whole movie long :) so watch it if you can ^^ Seems that it’s a time for good movies now.

Then we elaborated our plans for going to Japan and trips inside of the Philippines. So Bernd and I are visiting my family when he comes here, then when Philipp arrives, we’re going one weekend to Bohol and one weekend to Palawan. And after the exams we’re flying to Osaka, take the overnight train or bus zu Tokyo, after some days go back to Kyoto, then Thomas and Amanda fly back again and I maybe stay some days in Osaka. The only thing we still have to do is book our flights^^

Tuesday we celebrated Amanda’s Birthday. We went to a really nice Italian restaurant in Eastwood (which you really can call a restaurant :). As we waited some time Thom ate all the bread with tomatoes, butter and „Leberwurst“ (everywhere it’s the same, the Germans are craving for food, the others can’t understand it^^). So before pizza, pasta and fruti di mare, it was gift giving time. As Amanda’s coming with us to Japan, Reece and Olive gave her a travelers guide for that and Thom and I gave her a scarf – so she never gets cold in the cinema again and a englisch-tagalog tale. Reece’s present was neatly wrapped (by fully booked :) and ours looked like we stole it from some people directly from the street, as it was a crampled SM bag *grins*

After a little rest at Thoms place we went to a Club in Partyviertel Timog/Tomas Morato Avenues (where you can find two of the biggest newscast companies, too ^^). I was relieved when Thom told me it’s a R’n’B not Technoclub, but as we came there they played more Techno – but the music improved after half an hour. In the club we met Jascha and some of his friends and Amanda made friends with a bunch of cultural dancers and a Philippine Comedian (sorry, we’re foreigners, we didn’t recognize him :P). And I discovered, that I like Red Horse more than San Mig Light, less sparkling and more smooth (Jascha I don’t have a headache yet :P).
And when the lights went on for our birthday-girl, we had an „Absacker“ at my place. After a nice morning shower, I was in bed at seven. Now me, the fan of sleeping needs to even out her sleep ^^

Hanni's Bookreview

Ok, after I’m easily disctracted if there’s a bookstore in sight and I’m following its call to come in (even more often when I’m alone :)) I will tell you what I read so far since I came here to the Philippines and what I liked and what not :)

My recommendations (you should be open to a little bit of fantasy):

The Graveyardbook – Neil Gaiman
Very catching story of a boy who escaped the murderes of his family when he was a baby and was rescued and cared by the ghosts of a graveyard. He discovers the graveyards and its sometimes creepy and weird but mostly friendly inhabitants as well as friendship to a girl as he’s growing up.
When he decided he want’s to go to school like every other child, he steps in the normal world, where the unknown murderer is already waiting.
I really like Neil Gaimans writing, it’s so easy flowing and deep at the same time. And in addition his stories will catch you as the protagonists discovers grow up, discover their personality, reflect themselves.

Neverwhere – Neil Gaiman
The same with this story. It’s about a normal citizen of London, you can say boring and caught in the life of monotony and a fiancee he’s not loving but thinks he needs to marry. As he helps a run down girl, he’s thrown in the world of London below full of adventures and magic. Until the end he wants to go back to his calm life. But then he realizes the stupidity.

The Timetraveller’s Wife – Audrey Niffenegger
This was a recommendation from Reece – and Reece knows the heartthrobbing stories ☺ Very romantic, but not cheesy! He travells through time, but by chance meets his later wife when she is six, but he’s already over thirty. So she knows him all of her life, while he’s searching for the right girl until he meets her at the age of 28. Then their dramatic part of life begins. And be sure it’s more of a lovestory than a sci-fi-novel. I read it in two days :)

The Classics:

William Golding – Lord of the Flies
This classic tale about the monster inside of us is full of metaphors, but slightly to short for my taste. But it’s a good book, if you like thinking yourself about the story, the meaning, the opinion behind it. And Golding knows how to describe the depths of human beings without mentioning it by the proper word (maybe there is none).

Noli Me Tangere – Jose Rizal
Must read if you’re connected to the Philippines – even if it’s over a hundred years old and you feel that. This book substitutes every history textbook about the spanish rule. The story about the man who comes back to rearrange his life is just the coat to describe the situation between the poor peasants, the church and the aristocracy of that time.

The Could read:

Wicked – Gregory MacGuire
It’s a nice idea to ask about the history of the wicked witch of the west (referring to The Wizard of Oz) and that she was not evil at all but became „evil“ because of the cirumstances and losses of her life. But that’s all, can’t see why it was on the bestseller list of the Times. It’s not really pageturning and it often looses context. It’s like a glance to another world without bigger explanations. A comprehensive plot line is missing and the there’s no flow growing while reading.

some difficulties

First: Liebe Sabine, alles Liebe, Gute und viel Glück zum Geburtstag!!!

When Belle texted me, she’s got something to talk about my visa... I was already aware that this sounded not good... Thursday I went to Belle’s Office and she showed me my passport. Yes, there was a visa inside but just until September 17. I wanted to bang my head on the table. Why is it so hard to get a visa for six months in this country... it’s connected at least to two of the following: bad medical examinations, quarantine, a lot of waiting, desperate follow ups, a lot of money and some bribe.
So at the end I’ll have paid about 250 Euros to stay in a country, that shouldn’t be afraid that foreigners will stay too long and on the other hand wants them to stay to spend some money... But this dismotivates my desire to go shopping or whatever...

When I went home with the jeepney Thom stopped me and I met a funny Filipino who was eager to speak spanish with me. I had to look for my words in the depths of my brain, but I managed well. Then Alysa, a Korean girl I met on my enrollment day crossed our way. We had tried to meet some times, but there was always something coming inbetween – so finally we met again by chance :) But the Filipino boy didn’t stop to speak in Spanish – I now have a glimpse of the information overload and trying to attend to everyone the boys must suffer, when they’re watching the Simpsons, but their girlfriend tries to tell them something important :P

After the long day I rewarded myself with some gyros and tomatorice. I invited Kay again and showed her the music I wanted to use for my MTV (if it’s good I ask someone to upload it ^^). Then I remebered I wanted to burn her a disc with German music for her birthday but I forgot. So I searched through my itunes afterwards and compiled a dvd.... now comes the horror. My drive was making noise, as if it would load a weapon and spill out the dvd in every next second so it can slice through everything on its way. Fortunately that didn’t happen, but it didn’t burn neither. Next try you could hear the tray trying to close but it didn’t work, try and try and try and some hammering on the laptop and some tries ... I even shut the whole thing down and tried it the next day, but the same problem. So after class I went to the mall to the mac store, after some waiting (again), they told me they could send it to the repair center and it would take two to three weeks. Shit, I was already thinking that could happen... Estimated four to six weeks without my computer is totally impossible (even if they would be in time). My search for a external dvd-burner was unsuccessful, too – I tried one, but my laptop is too old and didn’t connect. Fine.
Additionally I think we never get dsl, because Kaye’s application was rejected. So I’ll remain online between 11pm and 9 am...

After that, I needed to get me a huge burger, some french fries and a bookstore :) - I really like fully booked, because national bookstore is better for school equipment it looks like the book department in Karstadt :P - and went out spending 30 Euro on books (jeeez they got me, where was my intention of protesting against materialism to harm the economy... I would never do a good activist ;) But at least I have a birthday present for Emilie and one for Czarinas babyshower (that’s really cool – but I can’t tell you jet ^^). The other two things were a little bit more selfish...
Ok, next time there should be a little post about books, from the bookworm :)

Tuesday again no Filipino class – and I was so tired. And then we discovered, that we have to go to the UAAP games another four times. Let’s see, I think I’ll change my September 5 duty to a Thursday (should be free on that weekend to bring my boyfriend to the province^^).
After four freezing but effective hours at the internet cafe my eyes were dry and I pushed myself with sugar from Zagu’s. I think the guy already remembers me bringing all the white guys in his shop :P
Then weh ad our filmclass after over a month without classes. But she was really nice and apologized for her non-attendence, but she didn’t got all of our filmconcepts (I think the spam folder ate them). So I could revise it after the class, because she was showing us what movies she likes and how we should handle our film. Her favourite shorts from the 90seconds shoots with the original lumiere camera were 1) the analogy to a relationship breaking: up two eggs frying in a pan (shot directly from above) and a womans voice on the answering machine trying to talk to the man who’s frying the eggs and 2) the ill, former president walking through an alley (fixed camera) and talking about filmmaking, but also about facing things straightforward. I really liked the egg-one :) In the end she shortend it from 5 to at least 1:30 to 3 minutes. But I really think we have to elaborate something with different levels. We decided masteral subjects are lot more relaxed than bachelors – and I would add: more to think about, that’s nice.
Today almost the same, stress with my BA-subject, because I halfway finished my research and put some of it in the report already. Then I was already in the UP all my (male) groupmates cancelled the meeting just some minutes after each other.
But then we had our MA-class, talked about Kinatay. Why our Professor thinks it’s ugly and I think it’s superfluous, but have to admit, the directors nows the ABC of promoting his movie. Like didn’t give anyone a copy, even not the big Indi-Festival Cinemalaya, announced the premier in the UP Filminstitute with the special remark, that he will show it uncut – so the film rating comitee of the Philippines must be suspicious about the content, filled half of the cinema with his friends for the later discussion... And in the end there was nothing, almost no gore, just little sex (Schieles paintings reveal more), but a lot of shaking, dark, blurry pictures.
„That that kind of a very good movie, that you only want to watch once.“

Super, war mein erster Riecher also doch richtig.

Birthday-Not-Birthday

Yesterday we made a very nice and fine birthday dinner for Belle (who had her birthday on August 2 like Susi ☺) - Thom and I bought some German food. But first we went to a nice Cafe in Eastwood, where Belle had a light snack, I prefered icecreme and Thom had the first big/european sized sandwich ☺
When Reece joined us, we changed to occupy Thoms kitchen and cooked Fleischpflanzerl/Bulletten/Meatballs, Semmelknödel/Breaddumplings (without a cloth, so we changed our plan from making Serviettenknödel to Breaddumplings – but also without my first mistakes^^), salad, beans with bacon. I think everyone liked it ☺ But Dai had to stand our teasings because of his „cat scratch“ (actually it was a Filipina...) and Lloyd hat to explain why he had a FEU (Far Eastern University) cheering tool (very evil! We’re all for UP!).
And as we were really full, Belle still had two cakes for us – two very delicious cakes btw! It was a really nice evening and I was able to prepare another birthday present as well^^

Today we celebrated Kay’s Not-Yet-Birthday. First I headed to the mall, to find a nice present – and you know I like to look out for books, so I was really happy to find my all time favourite tale (The curious incident of a dog in the night time – which I think I already recommended to all my German friends, but is quite uncommon here ☺) And I have to admit I looked for pants for myself, too.
As we Germans are a little bit peculiar about to early congratualations, we just celebrate Not-Birthdays instead. Included another nice dinner with burgers and Philippine french fries, wine/water at Thom’s place, cocktails at the sportsbar in Eastwood.
So that were to very nice evenings in the manner I really like :))) No I have to prepare to wake up early again :P

Von Zungen und Lippenbekenntnissen

The week started as calm as ever, some Uni some cancelled classes, some memorial services for Cory. Then wednesday there was the funeral of Cory Aquino and I watched at least the speech of her daughter Kirs. When I talked to Thom later we both had to admitt, that is was very tearful, even for us.
With the remaining free day, because of the funeral we went shopping (Thom, Reece and I) – the first real big shopping day, since I’ve been here! (Unbelievable if you know me, I know :P) In the end I spend more as I wanted to, but I found dresses in my size (very hard in Germany, as all the women there are so tall...) and very nice blouses.
I think Thom made some revealing pictures...

The next day I carried myself half-sleeping through the day. Maybe it was because of the rain, I don’t know but I was a wreck :P Matt had to deal with me during lunch-time and in the end it led us two eating kare-kare with tongue. I thought it was fish, as I had a bite, but as I was chewing and chewing and couldn’t swallow it I put it aside and later we found out what it was ^^

Friday was the day of our interview-production. At five my cellphone rang and Kay texted me her interviewee won’t come! After some text messages, which I expected not to be answered I rang Thom out of his bed. And I really got a bad concious when he was telling me, he didn’t slept the night – but fort he sake of our production I could persuade him to come (as I rang him at 6.45 he still had one and a half hour to get ready^^). And in the end he even was a little bit glad he did that ☺))

My interview was re-scheduled so my interviewee Dennis and his laptop weren’t ready yet. But we did it anyway. I was a little bit nervous, f* english, but that’s why I wanted to do the class ☺ Dennis is chief photographer of the epa here in the Philippines, you can have a look at his pictures here: Dennis Sabangan on epa and beside that he’s my classmate in my often cancelled shortfilmclass.

Later we had lunch with Reece and went to the nice Cafe next to the not-finished museum on campus ☺

As Kay’s got her brithday next Tuesday she invited us to a little party with her friend Yuuya. They got a amazing cake (which was amazingly blue, too) and napakamasarap na pansit (very delicous noodles). They celebrated in a part of the University, that’s under construction for a long time :P And then we found out how small the world actually is, when we met a friend of Thoms German-learning friend Christina, who is in Germany at the moment ☺)) (As there were more pictures, I putt hem on picasa).

Another Picture Post

@ Kumiko and Non-Germans: Ok, I try to write some things in English :) But you have to forgive me, the little stories stay in German, you still have Twitter to read :)
Any other language requested?

Here are some pics of my apartment, as Bernd wanted to have a look - even if he's coming in a month and doesn't have a chance to avoid it :P
Sorry for the chaos, but try to fit all your stuff on a 1 meter to 1 meter table - Genie beherrscht das Chaos, gell!

And Thom, Jascha, Jen in the Bed in Eastwood (just the name of the bar :P)

Faces

Bad News Day

Time: People Power's Philippine Saint: Corazon Aquino, 1933-2009
