Filadelfia

As the trip to Asuncion would have taken us up to 30 hours we decided to do a stopover somewhere in Paraguay. Have way into Paraguay Filadelfia seemed like a nice stop, just eight hours to Asuncion, in the Middle of the Chaco and a former German colony :) We thought that would be funny.
As the bus left us in the middle of nowhere with no Paraguayan money we were lucky, that there was a petrol station with a nice restaurant right in front of us. The brasilian who spoke some german helpt us by calling a cab service. While we waited some soutamerican time longer than expected two families left their lunch - all of them looked somewhat german and spoke some german as well! We looked for the Germans and found them :)

Directly in Filadelfia the hotel staff were Paraguayan and as it was Sunday the city was quite, peaceful and did not look that much German any more. It really was more like in the middle of nowhere, just around ten chess-like streets, a lot of brown sand, trucks, some old farming machines and dust. But some sings for businesses showed the German ancestors in the names.
Moreover we found the monuments for the Menolitian immigrants which is a Eastgerman group of people that wanted to live their religion and conservative habits without restrictions. As Paraguay offered them cheap land and liberty they went there in the 1930s. Back then they were some hundreds of pious people now they are around 5000 around Filadelfia and some more all over the countryside of Paraguay.

As the shops opened the next morning we really got the German flash. First we went to get some bus tickets to Asuncion, we started in Spanish and found out this company was going there too early, as we were ready to leave the woman asked us if we speak German and told us about the other busagency in a funny accent. Almost the same story in a shop for clothes (exept the woman was faster and spoke totally straight German!). In the Supermarket the cashier asked me in German if I want sweets instead of change, as 400 Guarani aren´t worth for nothing (5900 Guarani are one Euro :). And in the park the totally blond, joking schoolchildren went past us on their bikes... What a city in the middle of Southamerica!
